Our Area
Alta Verapaz, the land of the Q´eqchi´
Indians, is located in the cool, humid mountains of northern Guatemala.
Cobán has an average temperature of 70 degrees at an elevation
of 1320 meters or 4000 feet. The dry season, March through May, can
be quite hot and the winter months, December through January, cold and
damp. The area is mainly agricultural, producing coffee, cardamom, spices
and cacao. The Verapaces have a large assortment of attractions for
the intrepid traveler; bird watching, orchid hunting, trekking, caving,
whitewater rafting or just becoming acquainted with the indigenous people,
who to a large degree, have managed to preserve their language and customs.
If weaving is your interest, we can arrange classes by local indigenous
weavers. Your tourist book, (or our receptionists) can guide you to
the activities of your choice. Events that can be of particular interest
to people are: Semana Santa and its religious processions (March or
April). The International half-marathon race (May). The ¨Festival
Forklorico¨, selecting the indigenous princess, RABIN AJAU, from
candidates arriving from all areas of Guatemala. This is a good way
to view the authentic costumes of different areas in one place (last
Saturday of July). The Cobán Fair (first of August through the
sixth). Last, but definitely not least, the Orchid Show (end of November
or early December). Whatever your choice, let LA POSADA be your host,
while passing through ALTA VERAPAZ.
